From Farmer Al

Farmer’s Lament

I’ve said this before: Enough!
We are fed up.
Enough, enough. Enough
cold and wet and windy. Give us
dry and warm. Sun. Calm.
Let us hear the buzz of bees.
Let us see the fruit grow.

So, I just finished commiserating with my friend Bill Denevan, the apple grower from Santa Cruz, and he told me a couple of war stories about years past like this one. He said that Mother Nature will surprise you. Just when all seems lost…Behold, a bumper crop may appear! And that’s what we call Farmer’s Optimism.

Last Thursday afternoon, I came in to the house to discover my daughters Maddie and Millie (aged 7 and 5) wolfing down leftover bread with Frog Hollow Farm Olive Oil. Here is the Farmer’s Delight! Picture a large round of dense wheat bread cut in half with them digging chunks out from its middle. Each chunk gets dipped in the same healthy oil in your boxes this week and stuffed dripping into their mouths. A sight to warm the heart of the farmer who grew the olives being so richly enjoyed and to Dad for kids who love to eat something other than junk food.
Signature of Farmer Al

Editor’s note: When transcribing Al’s letter, I couldn’t help but notice the tempo of the words. He let me arrange it as poetry. Fitting, I think!

Albany Dinner Swap & Social

If you live, work, or pick up your CSA box in the Albany or North Berkeley area, the Albany Community Center is hosting a Dinner Swap & Social on the evening of April 25th. Kimi participated in the March event held last week and had a great time meeting other Albany/Westbrae locals. A low-key community building event, it includes a wine tasting and snacks and is kid-friendly with lots of room for kids to play. Participants bring 3 portions of a main dish (each portion enough for a family of four) and swap, going home with three full meals to enjoy that week or freeze for the future. For more info or to RSVP, contact Robin Mariona, the event organizer.

If you want to help grow your site, let us know and we’ll send you flyers (or a PDF) that you can post or email to anyone who might be interested in joining. Since active members receive 10% off going from one season to the next, if you know someone who has been thinking of joining, now’s the time for them to get a 4-week trial started!

Are you guys still tweeting when boxes are ready for pickup? That was so helpful.

      Hi Sarah,

We’d like to and we plan to!

We had a period of using a different driver who didn’t have the ability to check in with us on the road.

Our driver out today will be able to check in with us, so we’ll start up with the tweets again. Keep an eye out and thanks for letting us know you find it useful!
