A few months back Farmer Al joined cookbook author and blogger Chery Sternman Rule at Omnivore Books in San Francisco for a book reading and signing of her recently released cookbook Ripe: A Fresh, Colorful Approach to Fruits and Vegetables.  Frog Hollow Farm was pleased to be in such good company and to provide samples of fruit to guests at the event. Ripe is a collaborative effort between Cheryl, who created the recipes featured in the book, and Paulette Phlipot, whose beautiful photography captures each recipe.  Ripe takes a fresh approach to cooking with produce and is arranged by color.  The jewel colored pages offer accessible and delicious preparations featuring a wide range of fruits and vegetables.  Cheryl’s fun and open narrative style adds to the book’s appeal.  It’s a great book for kids because of it’s colorful appeal, beautiful images, and smaller format.  Millie and Maddie, Farmer Al and Becky’s kids, love flipping through it and pointing out recipes that includes fruit grown in their backyard – the orchard!  This week’s recipe and accompanying photo were provided compliments of Cheryl and Paulette.  Thanks to them both for creating such a beautiful and delicious book. Annual Battle of the Peaches Each year Frog Hollow Farm hosts a Battle of the Peaches.  The contenders are two of our most coveted peach varieities – the O’Henry’s and Cal Red’s.  The battle began over 20 years ago between Sarah Coddington, FHF co-owner and Farmer Al.  Sarah favors the O’Henry and Farmer Al’s favorite is the Cal Red.  Every year our customers cast their votes to determine the best tasting variety.  This past Saturday, our Farmers Market stands through out the Bay Area hosted a blind taste test and customers cast their vote.  You all tried the O’Henry over the past two weeks.  This week’s box features the Cal Red.  Cast your vote on your favorite variety at http://poll.fm/3u6fx and help us determine this year’s winner.  When CSA members add on a full flat of a specific variety (Cal Red or O’Henry) you’ll get a FHF free t-shirt which features your allegiance to your favorite variety (while supplies last).
