Farm Focus: The Twig

THE TWIG By Master Composter Russel Levari There once was a story a story so big; but it all began with just one little twig. A twig indeed is a fine thing while live; but after it’s dead it’s still alive that’s no jive. You see that twig will go into a trash can or two; and then into the landfill boo hoo hoo hoo. But must it really end up in a ditch, buried and useless is this not a glitch-’ The twig must be Freed from this terrible fate But how could we free it, so went the debate. Fret not my fair friends there’s a simple solution It helps out the twig and helps limit pollution Recycling’s the key and the twig will help most If instead of landfilling it’s turned to compost!!! The twig is a brown or carbon type matter Whereas grass is a green or nitrogen adder You mix up the two both browns and greens In one of many of your magical mixing recycling machines Half is from green and half is from brown if you must you can gather from friends all over town Mix it together and keep it near wet Dry compost is slow and that’s a sure bet Now to keep you out of certain composting trouble To speed up your compost time by nearly double Keep the pile moist and it will heat up real hot When it starts to cool down stir it up; the whole lot Mix at least two times over the next two weeks Checking up daily by taking some peeks Watch as the matter breaks down and decays It begins to happen in a matter of days The twig now decayed microorganisms at work You think this a fluke a ridiculous quirk No this is the cycle of recycling a twig Any organic matter will do it yes even a fig So try this at home keep the landfills less full It’s easy to do as we’ve shown that’s no bull And when you’re all done and your twig is compost Oh this part you’ll like the most very most Put out your compost right in to your soil Your plants will grow strong without having to toil Your trees will grow strong and grow toward the sky And a new twig will grow do you now see why The plants are all happy compost saving the day Your twigs gone full circle, that’s all we came to say
