From Farmer Al

Dear CSA Members–Pot of Gold The rains are finally (hopefully) behind us, so let the summer begin! Our “Gold Dust” peaches always herald the beginning of summer…it’s the first of the classic “peachy” varieties, with all the right qualities of taste, sweetness, juiciness, and soft texture! It’s an heirloom that you will not find in stores or even at farmers markets. To my knowledge, we’re the only farm still growing this delicious variety. So enjoy ’em while we’ve got them…they’re small but they pack a lot of flavor. And now that the summer heat is here, the next big thing is to get all the orchards well-irrigated. The “ground team” does this. With seven men working, it takes about a half day to start the pumps and check each sprinkler for correct water flow over a “set” of 20-25 acres per day. While the “ground crew” irrigates, the “tree team” picks, prunes or “thins” the trees (e.g. all the things done on ladders.) Cherry season is just about done, but as you can see by the box, we are full-steam ahead for peaches. Signature of Farmer Al [/print_this]
