18_Reasons__07 Those of you based in San Francisco may already have heard about or even visited 18 Reason’s community space in the heart of the mission. Just a couple doors down from BiRite Creamery, their gorgeous space is hard to miss. Inside the elegant oak wood interior, they host a wide range of food related events including classes, talks, dinners and more – all in service of their mission to empower their community to buy, cook and eat good food everyday. In fact in just a few weeks, they’ll be hosting a dinner and talk with our very our Farmer Al, featuring a 3-course meal featuring our pears. In honor of this exciting event, we’re giving you a better look at this awesome organization. 18 reasons was started in 2007 when SF’s beloved BiRite Grocery’s dream of having a community space was made a reality. The space, on 18th and Guerrero, was already a community event space previous directed by two long time 18th -and-Guerrero community members. They spent the next few years developing their food education programs. And in 2013, the organization’s fate would forever be changed when they collaborated with fellow 18th-and-Guerrero community food activist, Sarah Nelson and her nonprofit Three Squares. That year, Sarah organized San Francisco’s first Food & Farm Film Fest. They two organizations enjoyed working together so much that they decided to merge. Since then, Sarah’s Cooking Matters program, offering cooking and nutrition classes to low-income communities throughout the Bay Area, has been an anchor of the organization’s work. In addition to the Cooking Matters program they offer regular classes on topics ranging from knife skills to making vietnamese street food. For those of you eager to get cooking, we definitely recommend you take a look at their calendar. They also offer annual memberships, offering reduced prices on events as well as discounts at other 18th-and-Guerrero shops. We’d love to have you join us on Sept 30th for our dinner and tell your friends! Find more info and purchase tickets here: https://18reasons.org/classes-events/2015-09-30/dinner-discussion-frog-hollow-farm-fall-fruit.
