From Farmer Al

Dear CSA Members, Back in the good ol’ days when I was young–just getting started here in Brentwood, and Frog Hollow Farm was still a dream not even yet dreamed–I used to visit my old neighbor Clinton Smith. He was a bachelor in his late eighties and he’d tell me stories of his good ol’ days. The one I remember best is the one about his cherries. He had 20 acres of Bings (plus 60 acres of Blenheim ‘cots for a total of 80 acres) and it how he sold the crop that was so stunning:
“Every year, on January 1, the buyer would come to my house and hand me a check for the entire crop,” Clinton said. This was then (and still is today) unheard of for a buyer to take all the risk and pay in advance for a crop as risky as cherries!
It is a testament to the terroir of this land…the “taste of place” bestowed upon the delicious fruit grown here. Our rich Brentwood clay-loam soils combine with the microclimate of Mt. Diablo to produce what we have dubbed “legendary” here at Frog Hollow Farm. What a coincidence that decades later, you, our CSA member customers, are doing that very same thing: paying well in advance for the fruit, sharing the risk, and trusting in the terroir for the deliciousness of this fruit. From Kimi: Welcome to Spring/Summer!

Hi all! It’s mid-day Monday and we’re about to send the van to pick up the strawberries for this week’s box. We’re getting these berries from Lucero farms which is located about an hour away from us. We often partner up with Dirty Girl when it comes to strawberries, but the majority of their crop isn’t in season yet and they don’t quite have enough berries for us to be able to use in the CSA. Our friends at Stehley rarely get their blueberries this far north, but they just blew us away. We hope you enjoy these first boxes of the new Spring/Summer season as we gear up for the first of our stone fruits! Cheers, Kimi p.s. Look forward to a bonus add-on sample from a local organic soap producer next week! [/print_this]
