From Farmer Al

Dear Members, Last week was a busy one for me on behalf of the farm and Happy Child CSA. On Tuesday the 11th, I visited with Rebecca Klein of Lafayette who is creating a wonderful new vision for CSAs and for connecting schools and churches with local farmers for their food needs. Her CSA site is located at Temple Isaiah in Lafayette. While there, I met Janna Lipman Weiss, a mom and CSA member whose children attend the Jewish school located on the grounds. She has been working with the school cafeteria to show them how to source all their school lunch food from organic, sustainable local farms. I was amazed and inspired to hear their stories, which were as much about community building as about food! On Wednesday, Jeff and I met with Gudrun Enger, our West Menlo Park site host. She was further inspiration, with a beehive and chicken coop in her back yard to help feed her children with fresh eggs and honey. Gudrun made a great suggestion—for us to create a Happy Child CSA Advisory Committee composed of interested members. This could help bring the original shareholder idea back into the way we operate as a CSA, and was only one of her many fantastic ideas. Then, on Thursday I met a hopefully future CSA member: Dan Del Grande, the owner/brewmaster of Bison Brewery in Berkeley. He’s interested in making fruit enhanced organic beer using Frog Hollow fruit in season. We are very excited about that prospect! So, rather than fight the muddy conditions in our orchard, I got to have a delightful week of connecting with what I hope is the first of many people in our greater CSA community. Later this month…two visits to Monterey. Stay tuned! Organically Yours, [/print_this]
