<\/a>\n\nThis week, Farmer Marlene, Frog\u00a0Hollow\u2019s beloved Farm Assistant and\u00a0Veggie Gardener is braving the chills\u00a0of upstate NY to participate in <\/a>\n\nThis week, Farmer Marlene, Frog\u00a0Hollow\u2019s beloved Farm Assistant and\u00a0Veggie Gardener is braving the chills\u00a0of upstate NY to participate in The\u00a0Stone Barns Center\u2019s 7th annual\u00a0National Young Farmers Conference<\/a>.\u00a0The conference offers young farmers \u00a0the\u00a0chance to participate in unique\u00a0workshops addressing soil science,\u00a0technical skills, agricultural policy,\u00a0farm business management,\u00a0conservation and more. The conference\u00a0is the centerpiece event of a broader movement by Stone Barns' Growing\u00a0Farmer\u2019s Initiative - to educate and empower young, passionate farmers to tackle\u00a0big challenges and produce healthy, sustainable food for a growing planet.\n\nMarlene couldn\u2019t be more excited to attend. She\u2019s been a fan of Stone Barns\u00a0Center\u2019s work for a long time. She first heard about it when she heard NYC\u00a0based farm-to-table chef Dan Barber speak at a reading for his latest book -\u00a0\"The Third Plate. \" The Stone Barns Center is an educational farm and hub of\u00a0sustainable food innovation just 40 minutes out of NYC. Barber is on Stone\u00a0Barns' board of directors and founded Stone Barns' farm-to-table restaurant,\u00a0Stone Barns works year round to train and support new farmers looking to\u00a0produce sustainable food. They run a farming lab, which is constantly trying\u00a0out and sharing new techniques for less resource intensive and more productive.\n\nThe National Young Farmer\u2019s Conference that Marlene is attending will be four\u00a0days of learning. Each day offers dozens of workshops, with participants picking\u00a0their top two choices for each 1.5 hour time slot. The workshops Marlene is\u00a0most looking forward to are Hands-on Seed Saving, Crop Rotation, Reading\u00a0the Land: Matching Your Crops to Your Farm, and Work Songs for Small\u00a0Farms. She\u2019s also very excited to hear from one of her farming heros - David\u00a0Or, who\u2019ll be a keynote speaker. His book, Earth in \"Mind: On Education, the\u00a0Environment, and the Human Prospect,\" has been a huge influence on her.\n\nWhen I asked her what moved her to apply for the conference she said she\u00a0was excited to learn practical farming knowledge from experts and fellow\u00a0participants in workshops. She\u2019s most interested in learning about the innovative\u00a0farming practices that Stone Barns is developing for farming with the onset of\u00a0climate change and in alignment with her values for ecological sustainability\u00a0and humane treatment of animals. Plus, she\u2019s excited to meet a bunch of fellow\u00a0young farmers! We\u2019ll have an update from Marlene when she returns.
