NOT WHAT WE\u00a0WANT! But, we might as well enjoy it. Our daughters, Maddie, 11, Millie\u00a09, are now driving the golf cart (my handy-dandy-zip-around-the-orchard-\u00a0vehicle of choice...I love it!).\r\n\r\nThey went over to the newly constructed chicken house, the pride and joy of\u00a0my packing shed crew\/carpenter crew, which is painted in classic New\u00a0England Barn colors of fire engine red and white. Their mission: to feed the\u00a0pullets. Actually, of the 20 young chickens we\u2019ve raised from chicks we\u00a0received in November, four of them are roosters. Did I forget to tell you about\u00a0raising chicks in our garage? The dust! The smell! The floor covered in wood\u00a0shavings! But, it was fun and worth the mess. Anyway, under the capable\u00a0mentorship of Marlene and Kristin, our garden gurus, Maddie and Millie did\u00a0a fine job of raising the chicks from babies to teenagers and now they are \u201cfree\u00a0range\u201d in a fenced area around the little house. The fence is a sturdy chain link\u00a0to protect the chickens from coyotes, raccoons and foxes.\r\n\r\nYesterday evening the girls went over to put the chickens away in their coop\u00a0while I picked some greens from the nearby garden. Maddie and Millie with\u00a0the help of some friends, herded and lured the chickens into the house for\u00a0the night. Then they decided to go inside and visit with them. I could hear\r\n\r\nthe chattering and clucking going on for about 15 minutes and then, I turned\u00a0around and saw them all, girls and chickens both, outside of the coop running\u00a0around! The kids enjoyed capturing the hens and putting them away so much\u00a0that they just wanted to do it again!\r\n\r\nAll the best from the barn yard,\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Signature of Farmer Al\" src=\"http:\/\/happychildcsa.com\/assets\/FarmerAlSig.gif\" width=\"250\" \/>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&nbsp;","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dear CSA Members, Another beautiful, sunny January day here on the farm.
