This is good because it keeps the day\u00a0time highs (temperatures) low, helping to accumulate these precious winter\u00a0chill hours we need, especially for cherries. We haven\u2019t had a decent cherry\u00a0crop in three years because of warm winters. So far this has been yet another\u00a0warm one till now.\r\n\r\nEvery day I walk through the cherry orchards and examine the buds. They\u2019re\u00a0actually starting to fatten up (called \u201cbud swell\u201d). This is a very concerning\u00a0condition. Cherries are always the LAST of our fruits to bloom. It\u2019s just an-\u00a0other indicator of climate change creating more uncertainty for agriculture.\r\n\r\nOn the other hand, it\u2019s been really great weather for our winter garden, as\u00a0the greens continue to grow vigorously, soon to become the delicious new\u00a0menu items being offered at the Frog Hollow Farm to Table Caf\u00e9 at the Ferry\u00a0Building. Becky and I are also very much enjoying the winter bounty at our\u00a0own evening dinner table ... two kinds of kale, several varieties of mustard\u00a0greens, spinach, chard, purple and green cabbages, arugula, lettuces, turnips\u00a0and daikon radish, celery, etc. The list goes on... The fava beans look really\u00a0good. In fact, just yesterday I was visiting my old friend and long time CSA\u00a0member Narsai David who lives in Berkeley. He always plants fava beans in\u00a0his front yard, and I\u2019ve always admired them. But now they look a bit wimpy\u00a0compared to our own robust bean patches.\r\n\r\nOur plan for the winter garden program is to expand it to several acres, maybe\u00a0by next winter, so we\u2019ll be able to offer all of these delicious veggies and greens\u00a0to all of our CSA members.\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Signature of Farmer Al\" src=\"http:\/\/happychildcsa.com\/assets\/FarmerAlSig.gif\" width=\"250\" \/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dear CSA Members, Fog Fog has returned to the Central Valley!
