    A Pear Affair
After this somber weekend of remembrance, I hope you are all feeling ready for pears, pears and more pears. We’re planning an event for our CSA members; it’s a Pear Affair, and you’re all invited! Fall is upon us at Frog Hollow Farm, and with only 2 weeks left of peaches in the orchard, it’s time for Fall’s pear harvest. We are excited to extend an invitation to our CSA members, friends and families out to the farm on October 23rd. Bring a picnic, enjoy the fall weather, enjoy our varied Pears varieties, and desert will be on us! This is our way of thanking your for being a member of the Happy Child CSA.

Fall is the time of year we need to put back into the soil what the trees have used to create the fruit you’ve all been eating. This year, we’ve started a new endeavor of making compost on the farm. We’d like you to participate and we would love to get your used coffee grounds. In exchange, and part of the educational aspect of the Pear Affair, will be teaching you what we’ve learned about making compost. We would also welcome any and all feedback any of you have from your own experience making compost.

Our current compost regime consists of fruit scraps from our kitchen, combined with branch shredding from our orchard pruning. By adding coffee to this mix, we’ve noticed temperatures in the compost have increased dramatically from 120 F, to 150 F, indicating a much more biologically active compost pile that’s got beneficial microbes galore. Our next experiment involves mushroom compost.

    More Later,
