From Farmer Al

March is the month of madness here on the farm. We’re either angry at Mother Nature for warm, wet weather, or we’re delirious with delight for dryness.

Rain and warm temperatures (in the mid-50s) can spell disaster for stone fruit crops, especially apricots. These two factors combined provide the perfect conditions for fungal spores called brown-rot to grow on the flowers, killing them and thus destroying the crop. Last year that happened to us here at Frog Hollow Farm. We lost about 90% of our apricots, especially our best variety, the Goldensweet apricot.

Today, a similar weather weather event is occurring and I’m very worried! By this time next week, we’ll know what the extent of the damage is…stay tuned.

Organically yours,

Signature of Farmer Al

2011 Blossom Celebration

On Sunday, March 13th, we’ll be hosting our first farm event of the year. This year’s Blossom Festival is free and will include a talk by Marissa Ponder about UC Berkeley’s Native Bee project and a walking tour of the orchard with Farmer Al. Accessibility needs can be met for the orchard tour.

Our gates open at 11am. Pack your own lunch to eat in our orchard or buy some pastries and empanadas baked fresh from the farm kitchen. At 1pm, our speakers will teach us a bit about bees, with the walking tour to follow.
