Farm Focus: 5% for Schools

In this season of giving we are very excited to launch a new program for our school site hosts.

We currently have five schools which host a Happy Child CSA pick-up for for parents and staff. We very much appreciate that our schools partners are fostering a culture which values local sustainable agriculture and programs like CSA’s, that strive to build community around food.

Going forward, Frog Hollow will give 5% of the revenue generated from CSA subscriptions at each school site back to the school at the end of the season. Schools will be able to use this money for educational and enrichment programs as they see fit.

Introducing our School Site Hosts:
One Fifty Avenue Parker School in SF, a member since 2009, is a preschool with 61 students. The three classes enjoy our fruit as part of their snack program, and several parents take a box home. To maximize space in their urban location, they raised money to purchase 50 Woolly pockets to create a vertical garden for the kids to tend.

The Piedmont Middle School’s Green Team, an elective class on sustainability, hosts our CSA. The Green Team snacks on our fruit during their meetings and oversees the pick-up for parents at their school. Proceeds will go back into the Green Team’s operating budget and will probably be used for more healthy snacks – those teenagers can be hungry! We are looking forward to hosting the Green Team for a farm activity day in January.

The Mulberry School in Los Gatos, pre-K through grade 5 hosts a pick-up for parents in their beautiful garden. Mulberry kids are actively engaged in cooking and gardening programs. The school is excited to welcome on Lisa Derrington, CSA member and Mulberry parent, as their new sustainability teacher. Lisa will be integrating the cooking and gardening programs.

The Golestan School in Berkeley, a Farsi immersion preschool, hosts a pick-up for parents and uses FHF fruit in special cooking projects. They plan on using the proceeds from the CSA toward their thriving garden program, which Director Yalda Modabber tells us, is always happy to welcome more funding.

Montesorri de Terra Linda in San Rafael is a pre-k through grade 5 school and our newest site. Parents from the Green Committee have welcomed us into their school and worked with us to share information on our farm and fruit with the school community. We are looking forward to participating in their Earth Week in April and to attending an upcoming talk they are hosting on health and nutrition.
