FARM FOCUS: 18 Reasons Food Lit Book Club

Are you a self proclaimed food nerd? If so, you’ll be excited to meet fellow CSA Member Heather Knappe! Heather is a long-time member of our CSA program.

She is also the organizer of 18 Reason’s Food Lit Book Club. Meeting every month since 2009, the Food Lit Book club discusses the latest and greatest in food fiction and non fiction over a delicious pot luck lunch. Sounds like heaven to me!

Heather started the book club 5 years ago at the prompting of Celia Sack – owner of San Francisco’s one of a kind food bookstore – Omnivore Books. Heather had been obsessed with food books for a long time and had begun to frustrate the members of her then non food themed book club by repeatedly suggesting they read books on food. So when the opportunity to lead a food focused club through SF’s 18 reasons (non profit offering community food education) was a dream. Today, the club is going strong and regularly has food authors and innovators as guests.

The best part, according to Heather, is the sense of camaraderie. Members come back month after month; many, for years now. Heather says the thing that keeps folks coming back is the uniqueness of the group. It’s such a treat to connect with others who share a passion for food; getting to geek out each month on food topics that partners, friends or coworkers might not be excited about. Plus, the lunch is always delicious, as you might expect from a potluck populated by foodies.

To join in for the next book club sign up here! One off lunch discussions are $15 and on the 3rd sunday for every month. To join, just buy a ticket and show up. The next meet up is January 18th 11am-1pm. This January they’ll read San Francisco: A Food Biography by Erica J. Peters. Author Erica J. Peters will be joining them. For more info or to buy tickets go 18reasons.org
