We are very pleased to be partnering with the Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF) Harvest of the Month program. The program is an initiative of the California Department of Public Health with the goal to increase students’ access to and preference for fruits and vegetables. Frog Hollow will be providing 11,000 elementary students throughout Santa Clara County with a taste of our Warren pears. In conjunction with fruit to sample, each participating classroom receives an educational kit which includes a farmer profile, information on the variety, recipes, a parent newsletter and other resources to encourage the discussion on how food travels from farm to plate.
With nearly two out of five children in California overweight or obese and only three of ten children ages 9-11 eating the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables, we are happy to be able to participate in this program which seeks to instill an interest in eating healthily and locally in our youth. We hope to be able to partner with the Harvest of the Month program again when our apricots come into season.
