Farm Focus: Souper Seconds

In the U.S., a whopping 40% of our food goes to waste. At Frog Hollow, we strive to reduce our own food waste through our homemade compost, our farm kitchen, and our dried fruit production. Recently, however, a new and innovative outlet for reducing food waste has come to our attention.

The women at Souper Seconds, a female owned and operated start-up, have provided us with an additional outlet to sell our produce, thus, further reduce our food waste. They are passionate about reducing food waste and desire to put to use the high quality food taken to farmers markets that usually gets dumped if not sold. Souper Seconds provides an opportunity for us to sell our surplus of kitchen grade, great, sweet, and tasty fruit (that we would otherwise compost) to businesses that need our fruit. This allows both businesses and growers to save time and money, while furthering the impact of our delicious fruit!

We have been working with Aimee, a former farmer and one of the women who works at Souper Seconds, since the beginning of the year. She has been purchasing our fruit and and selling it to companies like Inna Jam in Emeryville who make delicious jams from our fruit! This is very exciting for us as this means that our really high quality fruit isn’t going to waste and not being enjoyed. Instead of cutting and drying this fruit, which involves a lot of hassle with storing, bagging, and selling, we can sell our fruit within an hour and deliver it in the same day to businesses that will put it to good use! (But don’t worry, we still love dried fruit and that isn’t going away!)

Souper Seconds is a more efficient marketplace within the local food industry and we hope you are as excited about the work they are doing as we are! It is our hope that our efforts and the efforts of people like the women at Souper Seconds will make a lasting impact on our community, our world, and our environment. Help us to reduce the 40%!
