Fruit & News of the Week: January 22, 2018

This Week’s Fruit:

Taracco Blood Oranges
Frog Hollow Farm, Brentwood, CA
A beautiful orange to deep red flesh is revealed when you slice
open a Tarocco. The flesh of the blood orange is firmer and
more dense than an orange and its flavor is a little more tart.

Meyer Lemons
Frog Hollow Farm, Brentwood, CA
Thought to be a cross between a regular (Eureka or Lisbon)
lemon and a Mandarin orange. They have a smooth deep yellow
peel that is highly aromatic and great to use as zest in recipes
and a sweeter less acidic flesh than standard lemons.

Minneola Tangelos
Twin Girls Farm, Dinuba, CA
The Tangelo is a cross between a mandarin and grapefruit. Its
skin is easy to peel and its flesh is a deep orange, tender and
juicy with a rich and sweet flavor.

Fuji Apples
Cuyama Farm, New Cuyama, CA
Fujis are a cross between Red Delicious and Ralls Janet, an
heirloom apple dating back to Thomas Jefferson. They are one
of the sweetest variety apples around making them a household favorite.

Pink Lady Apples
Smit Farm, Linden, CA
Pink Lady is a cross between the Golden Delicious and Lady
Williams. They are a crisp and juicy apple with a tart finish. Pink
skins and a creamy white colored flesh that resists browning
make this an excellent apple for salads and slicing.

Hayward Kiwi
Chiechi Farm, Live Oak, CA
Originally known as the Chinese gooseberry due to its Chinese
origins. Hawyward Wright, a New Zealand nurseryman
propagated his plants by grafting, and they eventually became
the preferred cultivar of growers due to their sweet flavor.

A Note from Farmer Al

I got some good news this week: Chef Becky’s Chocolate Orange Marmalade Cake is making a comeback. It’s one of my favorites and it makes a beautiful Valentine’s gift. Becky makes these  cakes in small  batches, mixing rich dark chocolate, our sweet navel oranges and a touch of coffee. Then she adds a layer of her very own navel orange marmalade and frosts the whole thing with dark chocolate ganache. No wonder it sells out so fast!
Need more Valentine’s Day gift ideas? I’ve got plenty! Our Fruit Lover’s Delight is a mix of our
sun-dried, sulfur free organic fruit and your favorite fruit conserve. We pack everything in a nice gift basket so it makes a statement.
And we’re still picking beautiful, juicy Tarocco Blood Oranges and Meyer lemons. Moro Blood
Oranges are on the way.
Organically yours,
Farmer Al
