Farm Focus: Mulberry Tree Update

On a golf cart ride through the orchard last week we stopped to see how our mulberry trees are doing. Last January we planted 150 trees. Since our cherry crop has been so light due to warmer winters, we’ve planted mulberry trees to provide us with a delicious late spring crop. The primary variety planted in the orchard is the Pakistani variety which is prized for its beautiful balance of sweetness and acidity and possesses a mild fruity flavor. The Pakistani variety is the earliest in bearing fruit. We’ve also planted the Persian variety which is later bearing and has an intense sweet-tart flavor.

Mulberries are coveted in many cultures and have been recognized for their exceptional health benefits. They are high in phytonutrients which help reduce the risk of cancer and strokes. Mulberries are exceptionally high in Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, that boosts immunity and reduces inflammation. Just one half cup of mulberries contains a third of the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C.

We are happy to report the trees are doing very well. They’ve grown about 6 feet already since we planted them. The trees are currently in their first leaf. We can anticipate having a sizable harvest during the third leaf period, which will be the Spring of 2018. We can hardly wait!
