THIS WEEK’S FRUIT
Hass Avocado
En Divina Luz, Temecula, CA
Creamy in texture, nutty in flavor, with a small to medium seed. The Hass skin is easy to peel and darkens from green to purplish-black as it ripens.
Fuerte Avocado
Churchill – Brenneis Orchard, Ojai, CA
A California variety prized by specialty growers for its ability to withstand freezing temperatures and was aptly named “Fuerte” or strong in Spanish. It has a smooth, thin, grass green skin with pale green flesh. Fuerte are less oily than Hass but have a rich and nutty flavor.
Fuji Apple
Cuyama, New Cuyama,CA
Fujis are a cross between Red Delicious and Ralls Janet, an heirloom apple dating back to Thomas Jefferson. They are one of the sweetest variety apples around making them a household favorite.
Pixie Tangerines
Churchill – Brenneis Orchard, Ojai, CA
Pixie tangerines are a late season variety that begin ripening in March and April. Their tough skin, which may need a knife to aid in removal, gives way to fruit with a very robust flavor making it worth the effort.
Clemenule Mandarins
Apricot Lane, Moorpark, CA
Clemenules have an intense color, few seeds and a delightful flavor with plenty of juice. Easy to peel skins make them a favorite for packed lunches.
Flame Grapefruit
Apricot Lane, Moorpark, CA
The Grapefruit is said to be a cross between the Jamaican sweet orange and the Indonesian pomelo, first documented in 1750. The skin of the Flame has a more yellow hue than the Ruby Grapefruit, but you’ll still find the same aromatic juicy flesh with a perfect sweet tart flavor inside.
A NOTE FROM FARMER WILL
Hi CSA Members!
I’m writing to you from the weathered, wooden deck of the farm trailer. I’m having lunch, tucked away behind a huge peach tree and a gnarled wisteria vine that’s crawled up a post supporting the deck overhang. Everything is soaking wet in the office courtyard and for some reason plants always seem so much more vibrantly colored and alive after a good rain. The pink peach blossoms and the lavender wisteria… unreal.
So we’ve all known it was supposed to rain. It’s not too great for the cherries and pears that are just now starting to bloom, but secretly I’m pretty excited to feel like we actually have seasons. It was seriously starting to feel like summer for a second there with the whole, no-rain-for-weeks thing. The farms around us planted corn and tomatoes and they just popped out of the ground about 5 days ago. I borderline got sunburnt last week. These are all signs of summer. It wasn’t making sense. But with all that sun came the intoxicating energy of summer. We got stuff DONE here on the farm.
I promise this is the last time I mention it, but the greenhouse is officially done! And I’m very much so in love with it. It looks great aesthetically, the plants inside look so happy and healthy, and the best part is that there is so much room for activities. Fifty feet of vegetable producing power. We’re back on track with sowing our summer vegetable seeds and I’m feeling very good about our vegetable operation as a whole.
I really want to get to the point where we can grow enough veggies to have a variety of things ready to eat for you year round. I would love to see people be able to have the convenience of picking up vegetables with their fruit CSA. It really boils down to timing and production capacity on my end, but I know we can make it happen.
Cheers!
